Those > symbols aren't the only ones you'll find in e-mail messages. "Smileys" such as :-) (happy face) and =|:-] (Abraham Lincoln) add some feeling and a little bit of whimsy into the otherwise stark world of electronic messaging. The classic book Smileys by D. Sanderson (O'Reilly, 1993) contains a collection of more than 650 smileys and answers to your deepest questions, such as "Why are smileys sideways?" You can find loads of information about smileys on the Web at sites such as the Geocities' Smiley House at www.geocities.com/Heartland/6959/smiley.html. To find other smiley sites, just enter the word "smiley" in any search engine.
