Some inventions and discoveries have not only changed the trajectory of human endeavor, but have also changed the way we see the world around us. The printing press and, as many suspect, electronic publishing are two such inventions. At The Media History Project Web site, located at www.mediahistory.com/histhome.html, you can contemplate these types of questions. You can also find at that site a timeline of media from 5,000 B.C.E. to the present, reviews of books, archives of the Dead Media Project, and links to Internet resources on various media from oral history to the printing press to digital media. You can find a discussion of Thomas Paine as the moral father of the Internet at "The Age of Paine," by Jon Katz at www.wired.com/wired/archive/3.05/paine.html. To learn what the experts predict about the future of books and electronic publishing, read "The Future of the Book" by Nicholas Negroponte at www.wired.com/wired/4.02/negroponte.html.

A Framework for Electronic Publishing Issues   In the May 1996 issue of CMC Magazine, John December reviews the book Scholarly Publishing: The Electronic Frontier edited by Robin P. Peek and Gregory B. Newby (MIT Press, 1996). The book outlines the issues facing electronic publishers, and December's review summarizes and comments on those issues. In addition, the book review has links to articles about Web publishing written by David Strom, founding editor-in-chief of CMP's Network Computing magazine, Jim Brain, editor of Commodore Hacking and an embedded system designer, and John December, publisher and editor of CMC Magazine and author of The World Wide Web Unleashed (Sams Publishing, 1997).
