To learn more about operating systems, head for the Web sites of the companies that produce them. DOS and Windows operating systems are at www.microsoft.com, the Mac OS is at www.apple.com, UNIX is at www.sco.com, and Linux is at distributor sites such as Red Hat (www.redhat.com) and Caldera Systems (www.calderasystems.com). On bookstore shelves, you'll find many good desktop references for the Windows operating system, such as Windows Secrets by Brian Livingston and Davis Straub (IDG Books Worldwide). Most college-level computer curricula include an operating systems course in which students learn about operating system services and the specific ways that an operating system controls computer hardware. One standard text for this course is Operating Systems: Design and Implementation by Andrew S. Tanenbaum and Albert S. Woodhull (Prentice Hall, 1997).
