It's difficult to keep track of the wild growth of the Internet. Some organizations do, however, try to gather information and make educated guesses about Internet growth. For example, Texas-based MIDs (www.mids.org/topics/index.html) provides not only detailed information, statistics, and maps about Internet growth, but also a link to "Internet Visualization," which is a slide presentation that helps you visualize Internet growth. For the latest market research from various sources, connect to sites such as the CyberAtlas site at cyberatlas.internet.com. The "Domain Survey" link at the Internet Software Consortium site, www.isc.org, provides statistics on the growing number of Internet hosts. Many analysts rely on information provided by Penton Media at boardwatch.internet.com. Georgia Institute of Technology's Graphics, Visualization, and Usability Center conducts extensive surveys of Web use. You can check out its results by connecting to www.gvu.gatech.edu and following the survey link for "World Wide Web Surveys." You can have some fun and make your own wild projections about the Internet using the Internet Statistic Generator at www.anamorph.com/docs/stats/stats.html.

"I no longer simply believe in miracles; I rely on them!"   You can find some very interesting statistics in the February 16, 1998, issue of the Rapidly Changing Face of Computing. In this issue, Jeffrey Harrow summarizes and paraphrases a speech given by Vint Cerf, one of the "fathers of the Internet," at the Internet Executive Summit. Some points include that Internet traffic on the MCI backbone is increasing at an annual rate of 80 to 100 percent, far outstripping growth in voice traffic.  In addition, by the middle or end of 1998 (depending on your source) there could be anywhere from 60 to 70 million U.S. Internet users. That's still only about 25 percent of the U.S. population.

The Internet Index   For a more humorous look at Internet statistics, take a look at the Internet Index, compiled by Win Treese of Open Market. Recent items on the list include the fact that 40 percent of on-line users watch TV and PC screens simultaneously and more than 40 percent of Webmasters dislike the term "Webmaster."
