Because the Internet reaches across international barriers and the world's economies are increasingly becoming one global economy, it has become even more important than before to understand international copyright laws and conventions. The International Publishers Association at www.ipa-uie.org is a good place to start learning about international copyright laws. Another excellent source of information is the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Web site at www.wipo.org. WIPO is a United Nations agency, and its purpose is "to promote the protection of intellectual property throughout the world, through cooperation among States." The International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) and Institutions wants to protect both the rights of copyright holders and the right of individual users to access information. You can read the IFLA Position Paper on Copyright in the Electronic Environment at www.ifla.org/V/ebpb/copy.htm, and you can find more resources on copyright and intellectual property at ifla.inist.fr/II/cpyright.htm (formerly ifla.inist.fr/ifla/documents/infopol2/copyright).
