For a more in-depth look at what happens in a
microprocessor, ask your local librarian for a copy of the book How Microprocessors Work by Wyant and Hammerstrom (Ziff-Davis
Press, 1994). This book has many excellent illustrations that help you visualize what
happens within the microprocessor circuitry. Microprocessor instruction sets are a pretty
esoteric subject. The instruction set you saw in Figure 5-19 is very small, compared to
those of most CISC processors. To get a taste of a real instruction set, look at the instruction set cards at archive.comlab.ox.ac.uk/cards.html (formerly, www.comlab.ox.ac.uk/archive/cards.html).
