For a more in-depth look at what happens in a microprocessor, ask your local librarian for a copy of the book How Microprocessors Work by Wyant and Hammerstrom (Ziff-Davis Press, 1994). This book has many excellent illustrations that help you visualize what happens within the microprocessor circuitry. Microprocessor instruction sets are a pretty esoteric subject. The instruction set you saw in Figure 5-19 is very small, compared to those of most CISC processors. To get a taste of a real instruction set, look at the instruction set cards at archive.comlab.ox.ac.uk/cards.html (formerly, www.comlab.ox.ac.uk/archive/cards.html).

Simple Instruction Set Chip 312 Often, it can be easier to comprehend a new idea when you begin by looking at a simple model. This Web site uses a simple chip to give insight into the structure and function of instruction sets. Here, you can not only read the instruction set of a simple processor, but also learn what it took to build the processor. In addition to the instruction set, you can read about or view a list of registers, the components used, the assembler, test programs, diagrams, I/O instructions, the team members' e-mail, and more.

Motorola 68000 Instruction Set This Web page displays the instruction set for the Motorola 68000 chip. Information includes the instruction description, assembler syntax, data size, and condition codes. There are 77 instructions in the set. The page also includes address modes.
