Some conspiracies are now classics--the JFK assassination, Elvis sightings, and the Roswell UFO incident. New conspiracies keep popping up--the missile that shot down TWA Flight 800, the spaceship hidden behind the Hale-Bopp comet. The Disinformation Web site, which is located at www.disinfo.com, provides a database of information about the origins and credibility (or lack of it) of many conspiracy theories. The site includes "odossiers," which cover many sides of a given issue or topic, both pro and con. You can check out Internet-based hoaxes at the CIAC Internet Hoax Site: www.ciac.org/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html. The National Fraud Information Center at www.fraud.org helps consumers report fraud and offers helpful advice on how to avoid becoming a victim.
