Some conspiracies are now classics--the JFK assassination, Elvis sightings, and the Roswell UFO incident. New conspiracies keep popping up--the missile that shot down TWA Flight 800, the spaceship hidden behind the Hale-Bopp comet. The Disinformation Web site, which is located at www.disinfo.com, provides a database of information about the origins and credibility (or lack of it) of many conspiracy theories. The site includes "odossiers," which cover many sides of a given issue or topic, both pro and con. You can check out Internet-based hoaxes at the CIAC Internet Hoax Site: www.ciac.org/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html. The National Fraud Information Center at www.fraud.org helps consumers report fraud and offers helpful advice on how to avoid becoming a victim. Evaluating the Quality of Internet Information Sources   A project being conducted at the University of Georgia is developing instruments designed to help educators evaluate the quality of information presented on the Internet. This article describes preliminary results of the project and the evaluation criteria and categories that have been identified. You can find an extensive hypertext bibliography on this subject at The World-Wide Web Virtual Library: Evaluation of Information Sources.

Drudge Report   Traditional media considers much of the "news" available on the Internet to be suspect and not much better than what you might learn from your local rumor mill. One Web site author, Matt Drudge, has made gossip on the Internet, if not an art, at least a one-man industry. His Web site, the Drudge Report, came under scrutiny from both journalists and the law when he posted serious allegations about a Clinton administration advisor. Take a look at the Drudge Report for yourself, but also read the excellent New York Times article about this Web site. Go to the search page at the New York Times on the Web, www.nytimes.com, and search for "Drudge Report" (be sure to select search all articles, not search today's articles).
