Although Ted Nelson coined the term "hypertext" he claims to have been inspired by an article by Vannevar Bush called "As We May Think" (find it at www.isg.sfu.ca/~duchier/misc/vbush) that describes a personal information retrieval device called Memex. Ted Nelson originally envisioned hypertext as the underlying technology for project Xanadu, a vast repository of linked documents that readers could easily peruse and even add their own annotations. You'll find the Xanadu Web site at www.cinemedia.net/xanadu. Your library might have Nelson's books, Literary Machines (1981) and Computer Lib (Microsoft Press, 1987). Michael Joyce and Carolyn Guyer are hypertext writers. Bob Stein is founder of the Voyager Company (publisher of CD-ROM titles, among them A Hard Day's Night). Sven Birkerts is a literary critic and author of Gutenberg Elegies: The Fate of Reading in an Electronic Age (Faber and Faber, 1994). The discussion is presented by FEED magazine in its Dialog section. FEED magazine has been publishing on the Internet sine 1995 and is noted for its high intellectual standards and innovative articles and dialogs. As a post-script to the discussion, hypertext author Carolyn Guyer created a Web Hyperfiction Reading List, complete with annotations and links to Web sites.
