The International PGP Home Page   Unlike the U.S. mail, e-mail is not yet a private form of communication. If you send e-mail from your place of work, your employer can read it. Most e-mail exchanged on discussion lists and through Usenet is easily accessible to other people. PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) is a method for making e-mail a more secure form of communication. The International PGP Home Page provides an overview of what PGP is and how it works. You can download the software here, access FAQs and documentation on PGP, and follow links to other PGP Web resources.

The Long Wait for E-mail Security   This article from PC Week points out that two competing standards may be slowing down the move toward more secure e-mail transmissions. The two standards are S/MIME, backed by Microsoft and Netscape, and PGP/MIME, backed by Qualcomm. The article also discusses why solving e-mail security issues has been difficult and compares the S/MIME and PGP/MIME approaches.
