A microprocessor is a fascinating microworld of nearly invisible circuitry. To get a glimpse into this world, visit micro.magnet.fsu.edu/chipshot.html, where you'll find links to excellent pictures of microprocessors taken through an electron microscope. You'll find more pictures if you connect to bwrc.eecs.berkeley.edu/CIC/die_photos/. Don't leave without looking at some of the photos with overlays--they show you the location of the microscopic ALU, registers, and control unit. For updates on current microprocessor technology, follow the site links for microprocessor manufacturers, such as www.intel.com, www.amd.com, www.cyrix.com, www.motorola.com, and www.ibm.com.

CPU Info Center  The CPU Information Center gathers together materials on CPUs, including announcements, technical documentation, performance information, and history. You can find online proceedings of the 1996 Hot Chips 8 symposium and a call for papers for the 1998 Hot Chips 10 symposium. There are also links to processor roadmaps and embedded microprocessor information.

IBM Microelectronics Home Page In September 1997, IBM announced that it had developed a method for using copper wire in microprocessors. This new process allows manufacturers to create microprocessors that are more powerful, smaller, and cheaper. You can learn more about this new copper process and keep pace with other advances in microprocessor technology at this IBM Web site. Also check out "Computer Chips 101" for details on how chips are made.
