To participate in discussion groups using your browser, connect to www.dejanews.com. Make sure that you read the rules before you begin posting comments. For interactive chats, the options seem limitless. If you log into Yahoo! chats at www.yahoo.com (and follow the Chat links), you'll see that often over 5,000 "chatters" are logged on at any time. Chatweb at www.chatweb.com has an easy-to-use interface, making it a good place to get started. If you're a member of AOL, CompuServe, MSN, or Prodigy, their members-only chat groups are also a good place to try out Internet chat. At the GO Network's Express Yourself site, www.go.com/
Community?svx=TAB_Community (formerly WebChat Broadcasting System), you can "just visit" or you can register (free) and participate. Salon magazine sponsors chats that have a reputation for being more substantive than chats at other sites. Connect to the Salon site at www.salonmagazine.com and follow the Table Talk links.

ZDNet ChatUser   You can find loads of useful information about chat from product reviews to tips and classes at this Web site in the ZDNet family. For example, the article "Meeting of the Minds" from PC Magazine, which you can access here, reviews 10 chat applications and discusses how corporations are using them to provide customer service and technical support. Another article, "Welcome to the Cybersoiree," from Computerlife, provides advice on searching for chat worlds and virtual communities and what do to once you've found one. You can even find chat and conferencing software to download here.

3-D Chat Worlds   Before taking the time to download specialized VRML software, read this review of six 3-D Chat worlds to learn what you can expect from each. The worlds reviewed in this article include AlphaWorld, Comic Chat, Tikkiland, Utopia, V-Chat, and World's Chat. Be forewarned: If you are looking for deep, engaging conversations, you're not likely to find them in these 3-D worlds. You need to think carefully about what you say in a chat session, because your words are public and preservable--the same as e-mail.
